Marketing Audit

Marketing Audits for Small and Medium-Sized Businesses

There’s usually plenty of marketing happening. The difficult question with this though is whether any of it is working together or delivering what the business actually needs.

You might have an active website, regular social posts, email campaigns, paid advertising and an agency producing monthly reports. Everyone appears busy, but leads remain inconsistent and it’s difficult to see which activity deserves more investment.

A marketing audit gives you an independent, honest view of the complete picture. I’ll look at what you’re doing, how the different parts connect and where your time and budget may be going to waste.

No automated score followed by a sales pitch. No 80-page document designed to make marketing look more complicated than it is. Just a simple and clear assessment of what’s working, what isn’t and what you should prioritise next to fix it.

Enquire about a marketing audit

What is a Marketing Audit?

A marketing audit is a structured review of your current marketing strategy, activity, performance and resources.
It looks beyond one channel to understand how your positioning, website, content, SEO/AIO, email, social media, paid campaigns, data and sales process work together. The aim is to identify gaps, duplicated effort, wasted spend and opportunities the business may be missing.

The precise scope will depend on your business. If you have a relatively simple setup, the review may focus on the foundations and the channels you’re actively using. A more established company with several suppliers, campaigns and systems may need a broader assessment.

Either way, the audit should give you clarity. You’ll understand the current position, the problems that need attention and the order in which they should be addressed.

When Does Your Business Need a Marketing Audit?

A marketing audit is useful when activity has built up over time but the overall direction has become unclear.

Perhaps leads have slowed down and nobody can explain why. You may be spending more without seeing a meaningful improvement, receiving plenty of website traffic that rarely turns into enquiries or relying on reports that show activity rather than commercial results.

An audit can also help before a major business decision. If you’re preparing to redesign your website, appoint a new agency, recruit an internal marketer or increase your advertising budget, it makes sense to understand what you already have before committing more money.

Sometimes the problem is the channel. Sometimes it’s weak positioning, an unclear customer journey, poor tracking or a lack of follow-up. The audit helps us find the actual issue rather than reaching for another tactic and hoping for the best.

What Your Marketing Audit Can Cover

Every audit is scoped around the business, the problem you are trying to solve and the information available. It may focus on one area, such as your website, SEO or paid campaigns, or review how several parts of your marketing work together.

Strategy, Audience and Positioning

I’ll review whether your marketing activity is aligned with the commercial goals of the business and whether it is clear who you are trying to reach.

This can include your messaging, value proposition, services and positioning. I’ll look at whether potential customers can quickly understand what you offer, who it is for and why they should choose you.

Where the strategy or positioning is unclear, I’ll identify the gaps and explain how they may be affecting the performance of your website, content and campaigns.

Website, SEO and Customer Journey

Your website needs to be visible, easy to use and capable of turning interest into enquiries.

Depending on the scope of the audit, I may review:

  • Website structure and navigation
  • Key service and landing pages
  • Calls to action and conversion points
  • Trust signals and supporting content
  • Mobile usability and accessibility
  • Technical SEO issues
  • Page titles, headings and metadata
  • Indexing, sitemaps and redirects
  • Website speed and performance
  • Structured data and schema
  • Analytics and tracking setup

I’ll also consider how people move through the website, where they may become confused or leave, and whether the content answers the questions they need resolved before getting in touch.

Search Visibility and Content

I’ll review how visible the business is in search and whether the website is targeting the right topics and search terms.

This may include keyword rankings, organic traffic, competitor visibility, content gaps, page optimisation, backlinks and website authority.

The audit will identify where stronger pages, clearer website structure or more useful content could improve visibility. It will also highlight technical or content issues that may be limiting performance.

Marketing Channels and Campaigns

Where relevant, I’ll review the channels the business is currently using, including SEO, content, email, social media and paid advertising.

I’ll look at what activity has been delivered, what it appears to be trying to achieve and whether the available results support the time and budget being invested.

For paid campaigns, this may include the advert, audience, offer, landing page, tracking and reported outcomes. A campaign cannot be assessed properly by looking at clicks and impressions alone.

The audit may also identify duplicated activity, missed opportunities and channels that are generating work without producing meaningful results.

Competitor Benchmarking

Competitor analysis can provide useful context when it goes beyond copying what another business is doing.

I may compare your website, search visibility, content, messaging, social presence and customer journey against selected competitors.

This helps show where competitors are stronger, where the market is following the same tired approach and where your business has an opportunity to communicate more clearly or perform better.

Data, Reporting and Performance

Marketing reports often contain plenty of numbers but very little explanation.

I’ll review what is being measured, whether the tracking appears reliable and whether reporting connects activity with enquiries, opportunities or revenue.

This may include Google Analytics, Search Console, advertising platforms, CRM data, call tracking and website behaviour tools.

I’ll also look at whether reports explain:

  • What work was completed
  • Why it was carried out
  • What happened as a result
  • What was learned
  • What should happen next

Where tracking is incomplete, I’ll recommend the tools or changes needed to produce more useful information.

Agencies, Suppliers and Internal Resources

An audit can also review how marketing activity is being managed across internal teams, freelancers and agencies.

I’ll consider whether responsibilities are clear, whether suppliers are reporting meaningfully and whether important work is being missed because nobody owns it.

This may identify areas where the business needs clearer priorities, stronger briefs, better reporting or additional specialist support.

The recommendation will not automatically be to replace an existing supplier. Sometimes the problem is poor direction, unclear expectations or a lack of useful data.

What You’ll Get From a Marketing Audit

You’ll receive an honest assessment of what is working, what is limiting performance and where your attention should go next.

The findings will separate urgent problems from longer-term opportunities, so you can see:

  • What needs fixing first
  • What could improve results
  • What requires further investigation
  • What can wait
  • What may not be worth investing in

Recommendations will be based on your goals, budget and available resources. I won’t hand you an unrealistic list of fifty things to do and call it a strategy.

The scope, areas being reviewed and final deliverables will be agreed before the audit begins.

What Happens After The Audit?

Once I present the findings and priorities, your internal team or existing suppliers can take the recommendations forward.
If you need additional help, I can also support you. That might involve developing a more detailed marketing strategy, improving a particular channel or providing ongoing fractional marketing.

There’s no obligation to hand every recommendation back to me. The purpose of the audit is to give you an independent view and enough clarity to make informed decisions about what happens next.

Who is a Marketing Audit For?

I work with small and medium sized businesses that want more confidence in their marketing decisions.

You may be an owner-led business that has grown beyond doing everything yourself, a B2B SME with several channels and a long customer journey or an internal marketing team that needs an experienced outside perspective.

A marketing audit can also help women-led businesses looking for collaborative, straight-talking support and leadership teams that are tired of hearing conflicting recommendations from different suppliers.

An Independent View Without the Drama

I’ve worked in-house and within agencies across B2B and B2C marketing, so I understand the pressures on business owners, internal marketers and external suppliers.

I’m not looking for reasons to tell you everything is broken. Good work should be recognised and built upon. Equally, I won’t avoid difficult conversations if money is being wasted or activity has continued without a clear purpose.

You’ll get a practical assessment explained in plain English. No unnecessary jargon, inflated urgency or pretending that changing one button colour will transform the business overnight.

Just a clearer view of where you are and what should happen next.

Marketing Audit FAQs

What’s the difference between a marketing audit and an SEO audit?

An SEO audit focuses specifically on organic search visibility. It may review technical SEO, content, keywords, internal links, authority and search performance.

A marketing audit is broader. It considers how your overall strategy, positioning, website, channels, reporting and resources work together. SEO may form part of the review, but it isn’t the only focus.

Is a marketing audit the same as a marketing strategy?

No. An audit assesses your current position and identifies what’s working, what isn’t and where opportunities exist.
A marketing strategy uses that understanding to establish future objectives, audiences, priorities, channels and activity. The audit can therefore provide the evidence needed to develop a stronger strategy.

Will you work with our existing agency or marketing team?

Yes. An audit can help an internal team or existing agency by giving everyone clearer priorities and an independent view of the wider picture.

The purpose isn’t automatically to replace suppliers. It’s to establish whether the current setup is supporting the business and how it could work more effectively.

Can you help implement the recommendations?

Yes, where further support is needed. I can help develop the strategy, coordinate specialist delivery or provide ongoing fractional marketing support.

You can also use the recommendations internally or ask your existing suppliers to implement them.
