Marketing Strategy Consultant for Small Businesses

Marketing rarely struggles because nobody is doing anything, in fact I often see there’s plenty happening. The problem is that there’s no clear agreement on what matters, who it’s for or how it’s supposed to support the business.

You might be posting on social media, sending emails, investing in SEO and paying for advertising. Everyone is busy, but the activity feels disconnected and the results are difficult to explain.

As your marketing strategy consultant, I’ll help you step back, understand what’s really happening and decide where your business should focus. Together, we’ll build a practical strategy around your audience, commercial goals, resources and budget.

I aim to avoice enormous slide decks full of buzzwords and generic plans that could belong to any business. I offer a clear direction that helps you make better marketing decisions and get the right work done so your business grows.

What Does a Marketing Strategy Consultant Do?

A marketing strategy consultant helps you connect your business objectives with the people, messages and marketing activity needed to achieve them.

My role is to understand where the business is now, what you want to change and what’s standing in the way. I’ll bring an experienced outside perspective, challenge assumptions and help turn a collection of ideas into a structured plan.

This can involve defining your target audiences, improving your positioning, reviewing the customer journey and choosing the marketing channels most likely to support your goals.

It also means deciding what not to do. Most small businesses don’t have unlimited time, people or budget, so the strategy needs to focus resources where they’ll make the greatest difference.

When Do You Need Marketing Strategy Support?

If your business jumps between ideas, channels and campaigns that depend on what feels urgent or what the latest supplier recommends, then whilst you may have ambitious growth plans there is no clear marketing roadmap. Perhaps you’re generating enquiries, but they’re not from the right customers. You might be preparing to launch a service, enter a new market, appoint an agency or build an internal marketing team.

Sometimes the business has simply outgrown the approach that got it this far. Referrals and word of mouth may have supported early growth, but they’re no longer predictable enough on their own.

The common problem is a lack of direction rather than a lack of effort. A clear strategy gives your team, leadership and external suppliers a shared understanding of what you’re trying to achieve and how marketing should help.

What I Can Help You Define:

1. Commercial Objectives and Priorities

I’ll work with you to understand your commercial objectives, current challenges and what growth realistically looks like. From there, we can establish what marketing needs to achieve and which priorities deserve attention first.

That might mean generating more qualified leads, entering a new market, increasing retention or becoming better known within a specialist sector. Different objectives require different marketing decisions.

2. Target Audience and Positioning

We’ll look more closely at the customers your business is best placed to serve, the problems they’re trying to solve and what influences their decisions. For B2B companies, that may include several stakeholders, from the person researching providers to the person approving the budget.

We’ll also examine how clearly your business communicates its value. Potential customers should be able to understand what you offer, who it’s for and why it’s relevant without wading through vague marketing language.

Clearer positioning gives your website, campaigns, content and sales conversations a stronger foundation.

3. Customer Journey and Lead Generation

This is particularly true for B2B and professional services, where customers may visit the website several times, read your content, compare alternatives and speak to colleagues before making contact.

Your strategy needs to account for that journey. We’ll consider how people discover your business, what information they need and where marketing can build enough trust for them to take the next step.

This could involve SEO, service-page content, case studies, email nurturing, paid campaigns or social media. The channels come after we understand the customer journey they need to support.

4. Channels, Budgets and Resources

Your business doesn’t need to appear on every available platform.
We’ll decide which channels make sense for your audience, goals and resources. Each channel should have a defined purpose rather than existing because a competitor uses it or someone attended an interesting webinar.

We’ll also consider how the work will be delivered. That may involve your internal team, existing agencies, freelancers or trusted specialists brought in for particular areas.

A useful marketing strategy has to be achievable. There’s no value in creating a plan that requires twice your current budget and a team of six people who don’t exist.

How I Develop Your Marketing Strategy

The first step is understanding the business, its customers and its current marketing position. Depending on what’s already known, this may involve reviewing existing performance, previous campaigns, website activity, customer behaviour and insights from your sales or leadership team.

If you don’t yet have a clear understanding of what’s working, a wider marketing audit may be the best place to begin. That gives us the evidence needed to avoid building the strategy on assumptions.

Once the current position is clear, I’ll help define the audiences, messaging, objectives, channels and priorities that should shape the plan. Recommendations will be organised in a sensible order so you know what needs attention now, what comes next and what can wait.

The result should be a strategy you can explain, use and adapt. Not something that only makes sense while the consultant who wrote it is still in the room.

Turning Strategy into Action

Once the direction is agreed, your internal team or existing suppliers may be able to deliver the work. I can help brief them, coordinate specialist support or remain involved to oversee implementation and review progress.

If your business needs continued leadership rather than a defined strategy project, fractional marketing support may be more appropriate. This provides ongoing ownership as the plan is delivered and the business develops.

There’s no pressure to buy every service from me. My job is to help establish what the business needs and find the most sensible way to make it happen.

Who I Work With

I develop marketing strategies for small and medium-sized businesses that want greater clarity and more confidence in their decisions.

That includes B2B SMEs with complex services, growing organisations building their marketing function and owner-led businesses moving beyond referrals and reactive activity.

I also enjoy working with women-led businesses that want a collaborative partner who’ll listen properly, challenge ideas honestly and keep the process practical.

You don’t need to arrive with everything neatly documented. If your marketing feels scattered or the business has grown faster than its strategy, that gives us somewhere useful to begin.
